Feedburner CEO Dick Costolo schreibt in diesem Artikel, wie RSS/Atom Feeds die Verteilung, den Konsum und die Wertschätzung von Inhalten im Netz verändern.

Feeds provide three critical benefits to any digital media:

1. A notification mechanism for updates to a specific channel of content
2. The ability to subscribe to content, creating a persistent link between publisher and subscriber
3. A semi-structured version of the content

Untenstehende Illustration zeigt zudem sehr schön, dass Feeds nicht mehr “nur” als Teil der Blogosphäre gesehen, sondern von vielen kommerziellen Anbietern als Distributionskanal für alle möglichen Medientypen genutzt werden.

However to me podcasting is just a media application in this massive disruptive shift called RSS - it will cut across all media from personal to corporate. Both TCP/IP and RSS started out as nascent defacto technologies. RSS is growing along the same lines as TCP/IP. When we look back TCP/IP displaced large existing players (SNA, DecNET,..etc) and RSS is doing the same today.
